The south-facing mountain location was chosen for the long bluff allowing distant views across Sand Mountain to the Tennessee River. The motor court in the front accommodates frequent family and guest visits. The expanded “X” plan is oriented true north/south, allowing for sun control in the central wing via a deep porch, dormers and a clearstory. The design exposes as many spaces as possible to the spectacular view. Materials were carefully selected. Native stone and blue stone were mixed for the interior and exterior. The game room walls, ceilings and roof beams are reclaimed barn wood.  All gathering spaces have deep-grind polished concrete floors. The roof is metal tiles. The exterior walls are composite lap siding above the stone wainscot, except at the major entry, which is clad in cedar.
