After securing the necessary zoning variance for more density, and the Historic Commission’s permission to demolish a dilapidated detached garage, this small back yard was turned into a more urban outdoor room. Framed by the addition of a highly detailed screen porch and a new garage in the style of the main house, a ground-hugging wood/composite deck leaves only a landscaped strip in front of the existing wood fence. The entrance from the driveway side of the house to the newly formed courtyard is through a diagonal breezeway connecting the porch and garage, looking down the deck’s herringbone pattern’s axis to a central specimen planting.
