Organic Retreat

Residential

Organized around an open living/dining/kitchen space, this primarily horizontal house uses generous casement windows and French doors to join the interior to the disappearing-edge pool deck and its view of the Tennessee River, Redstone Arsenal and Decatur beyond. The master suite on the north end of the house has pyramidal ceilings, dual dressing rooms, and a bath with “floating” tub and cantilevered wooden lavatories. The kitchen is precisely designed around the Owner’s European-trained cooking needs, with a built-in “esbank” seating area in the bay. The pronounced verticality of the stair tower leads up to the guest suite and oversized sitting room. A second floor balcony overlooks the pool deck and has the best view. An interior balcony looks into the living room below with a monitor that brings natural light into the middle of the house. Open to the living area by french doors, the octagonal music room/library is expressed on the front of the house. The sun room uses a bi-folding wall to become a porch open to the pool deck. Beyond the sunroom is the garage and semi-detached office with its reinforced above-ground storm shelter.
